Inferno leap woman ‘still critical’

By Catherine Lynagh

A burns victim who leapt from a first floor window last weekend to escape an inferno remains in a critical condition in intensive care.

Zara Gibson has two broken ankles, a broken bone in her back and 22% of her body has burns after jumping to safety from a Newtownards flat.

Described by her family as a “bubbly single mother”, the 21-year-old is in a medically induced coma, fighting for her life in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital.

Zara awoke to a raging fire outside the door of her boyfriend’s West Winds estate flat in the early hours of Sunday morning. Wearing no clothes she was engulfed with flames when she opened the front door.

Overcome by smoke and burns, Zara scrambled for safety, exiting from a first floor window with the aid of her boyfriend.
