Is comedian Frank Carson the saviour of Glentoran
Ulster comic Frank Carson is rumoured to be the mystery donor behind a huge cash injection which saved Glentoran FC from going bust.
The 84-year-old Belfast comedian dug into his own pocket to pump £465,000 into the club, according to a newspaper report.
It claimed Carson asked for total anonymity in return for the cash, which was invested to help the club pay a hefty tax bill.
A Sunday newspaper reported Carson’s donation staved off a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs and that the money had gone into a charitable trust — The Coates Trust — to support the club.
The paper quoted a “Glentoran FC insider” saying: “The mystery donor is Frank Carson but he doesn’t want anyone to know.
“He wants to stay in the background. His sole motivation is to keep Glentoran in business as a football club.”
First Minister Peter Robinson is one of only four people believed to know the donor’s identity.
Neither Mr Carson nor a spokesman for Glentoran were available for comment last night.
