Jail for alcoholic rioter struck by plastic bullet
A 43-year-old man hit by a plastic bullet during serious street disorder in east Belfast earlier this year has been jailed for rioting.
Colin Stewart, from Utility Street, was found guilty by a jury at the Crown Court last month of rioting in the Albertbridge Road on January 5.
Stewart, described in court as a "chronic alcoholic", was observed at the riot for a short period, during which he was hit by a plastic bullet.
Defence barrister Mark Farrell told Judge Gordon Kerr QC that Stewart was an architectural engineer before "hitting the bottle" and becoming homeless. Mr Farrell said his client was so drunk "he can't recall any of his behaviour, but he accepts the jury's verdict".
Judge Kerr sentenced him to 15 months, half in custody and half on licence.
