Jail for pair of muggers who stole man's laptop

Two men have been jailed after they admitted snatching a laptop computer from a man they had pursued and pushed to the ground.

The theft took place at Academy Road in the early hours of January 22 of this year.

Gareth McCartney (23), from Northland Road, who has 10 previous theft convictions, was jailed for 15 months.

Daniel Maguire (22), from Strand Foyer, who has two previous theft convictions, was jailed for 12 months.

Judge Piers Grant was told that the two men initially engaged their victim in a conversation but the atmosphere changed and they tried to grab his computer bag.

The victim ran off but McCartney and Maguire chased after him and knocked him to the ground before stealing the computer.

The victim immediately phoned the police. As he spoke to officers at the scene shortly after the theft, he noticed the culprits nearby. Both were arrested by police and made full admissions.

Jailing both men, Judge Grant described their actions as “nasty” and said they had undoubtedly caused considerable fear to their victim.
