Jailed thug Whittle guilty of 2015 Derry beer bottle attack
A man sentenced last month at the Crown Court in Londonderry after being assessed as an extreme risk to the public yesterday pleaded guilty in the same court to assaulting a man by hitting him on the side of the face with a beer bottle.
Barry Gordon Whittle (36), from Clareen Drive in Strathfoyle, had been jailed for six years for inflicting multiple fractures to a man's face in a one-punch attack in a Waterside bar in August 2014.
In court yesterday Whittle, who has 68 previous criminal convictions, 18 of them for serious assaults, asked to be rearraigned on a charge of wounding a 50-year-old man whom he hit with the bottle in a house at the Old Fort in Strathfoyle on November 27, 2015.
Whittle then pleaded guilty in front of a jury that had been sworn in.
Judge Philip Babington said he would sentence Whittle on November 13. He ordered a pre-sentence report for that date and Whittle was returned to custody.
