Jim Magilton daughter assault case is adjourned

Northern Ireland Under-21 football manager Jim Magilton who is accused of slapping and dragging his 14-year-old step-daughter down a set of stairs by the arms has had his case put back.

Magilton (47), of Aberfoyle Gardens, in the Upper Malone Road area of Belfast, had his case briefly mentioned at Antrim Magistrates Court.

He was not present in the courtroom where last week it was heard he could have an assault charge withdrawn and replaced with a caution.

It is alleged the former Northern Ireland international assaulted the girl on January 7 this year.

At last week's court a defence solicitor asked for the case to be adjourned for him to take instructions from his client.

A prosecutor said last week he had discussed "a way forward" in the case and he believed Magilton was going to take instructions in that regard.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said last week if there was to be an alternative disposal or any caution Magilton would need to be present.

Magilton was previously at the court in January and replied "yes" when asked if he understood the charge.

A defence solicitor told that court the accused was denying the charge.

A police officer said he believed he could connect him to the charge and told the previous hearing the allegation was that Magilton had slapped the girl a couple of times and dragged her down stairs by the arms.

In January a solicitor said the allegations were being contested in full and his client was "not accepting" the claims.

Magilton was released on his own bail of £500 in January.

The conditions were that he would have no contact with the alleged injured party and reside at an address in Belfast.

He was also banned from entering Tullywest Road in the Crumlin area.

At Tuesday's court a defence solicitor asked for the case to be put back until next Tuesday.

Judge Mullan said there was a "question mark" over which way the case will be disposed off.

The solicitor said his office received a call on Monday for a suggested way forward and the details have been passed to Magilton.

The case has been adjourned until March 14.

Magilton is a former manager of Ipswich Town, Queens Park Rangers and Melbourne Victory. He also played for teams like Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town.
