Police investigating the disappearance of John Thompson have confirmed that a man's body was found in the River Bann on Monday.

John Thompson (56), who has links to the Ballyclare area, was last seen in Portstewart on Saturday and on Sunday police put out an appeal for information about his whereabouts.

A formal identification and post mortem will take place in due course however at this time police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Last night a sea search took place after clothing was found near the entrance of the River Bann between Portstewart and Castlerock.

Civilian boats, RNLI jet skis, HM Coastguard, PSNI and Community Rescue Service were involved in the search.
