Judge in hospital abuse warning
A district Judge has warned that anyone who abuses medical staff in hospitals could expect to go to jail.
Barney McElholm issued the warning yesterday when he jailed a 48-year-old Londonderry man for five months.
Patrick Farren, from the Waterside area, used threatening and abusive behaviour in the accident and emergency department in Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry on Tuesday.
He was brought to the hospital in a drunken state by police officers after they'd removed him from a local hotel.
A prosecution lawyer told the city’s Magistrates Court: “He was highly intoxicated. He was verbally abusive shouting out loud and he caused distress to both staff and patients.”
Defence solicitor Dermot Downey said that when charged Farren said he didn't remember anything about the incident.
“He was highly intoxicated. When he drinks he commits offences and ends up in court”, he said.
