Judge opts out of porn case 'due to content'

by staff reporter

A man facing multiple counts of possessing extreme pornographic images has had his case transferred to another court as the original judge "does not feel she can deal with it" given the content.

Darran Peter Andrew Callaghan is facing 14 charges, with all but one of these relating to videos found on a mobile phone. He denies the charges.

The offences allegedly occurred on February 14 and Callaghan (29), of Edergoole Road, Fintona, Co Tyrone, first appeared at Omagh Magistrates Court in April where he was formally charged and remanded on bail. He pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned for a contested hearing.

However, as the date approached, the sitting judge at Omagh Magistrates Court decided she would not hear the case and ordered it to be transferred to the neighbouring jurisdiction, Dungannon Magistrates Court.

Having reached the lists there, District Judge John Meehan was advised by Callaghan's counsel that the sitting judge did not feel she could deal with the matter "given the content". Agreeing to the move, Judge Meehan adjourned the case for a new hearing date to be fixed. Callaghan was remanded on continuing bail to attend court later this month.
