Judges throw out truck bosses' appeal

Two transport firm owners from Newry have had their appeal for sentences for tampering with truck tachograph machines refused.
Patrick James Boyle (65) and his son, 36-year-old Mark Anthony Boyle, received 24 and 18-month sentences respectively at Carlisle Crown Court in February.
Lawyers said the sentences were too long and should be cut, claiming they had interfered with the tachographs in order to keep the firm going.
The three appeal judges said: “In our judgment of the present case where the appellants flagrantly and persistently circumvented the drivers’ hour regulations the sentences are entirely appropriate.”
