Ken would be tickled by memories of city theatre where career began
Veteran comic Ken Dodd will be happy to learn that there are older folk in Belfast who still remember the Empire Theatre, which dominated Victoria Square until it was demolished in this very month in 1965. For Ken launched his career in the long-gone Empire.
"Tears were shed when the final curtain came down with Bridie Gallagher and Frank Carson among the celebs who appeared there to say farewell as the place went dark for good," said Joey Mitchell, a lad of 15 at that performance.
"The original Kitchen Bar, the front door of which was opposite the stage door, was easily accessible to artists wanting a quick drink before or after being on stage. I used to wait at the pub door to get autographs."
And stars like legend Doddy, now 87, were always available in the pub after the show for a chat with journalists and their fans.
