An incident in which a 13-year-old boy injured another pupil with a knife at a grammar school was “a bit of tomfoolery which got out of hand”, a district judge has said.

The boy, who cannot be named because of his age, committed the two offences in St Columb's College at Buncrana Road, Londonderry, last October.

The defendant has pleaded guilty at the juvenile court to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing a craft knife.

He has agreed to comply with the terms of a youth conference report on the incident.

The judge said he accepted that there was no malicious intent on the part of the youth, whose actions he described as foolish.

He said the parents of both the boy and the injured party had to be commended.
