Knifepoint rape accused ‘is a victim of blackmail’

Published 08/10/2010

A man accused of burning a Lithuanian woman with a heated knife and raping her at knifepoint claims he was the victim of blackmailers, the High Court has heard.

Migrant worker Audrius Aukstuolis is also alleged to have locked her in a house, threatened to gouge her eyes out and put on boxing gloves to beat her.

Prosecutors said the alleged attacks were carried out on the woman, who he met online, after she travelled to Northern Ireland to meet him.

Aukstuolis (29), a Lithuanian national with an address at Lambfield Meadows, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, denies charges of rape, inflicting grievous bodily harm, and threats to kill.

Crown counsel David McClean alleged a romance between the pair turned violent after she came to stay with him in July.

Michael Boyd, defending, said: “Before she arrived he received a telephone call from a male in Lithuania warning him the arrival of this lady was going to cost him a lot of money.”

Mr Boyd said his client was told the woman was a prostitute and those contacting him were connected to her.

Bail was refused.
