Little orphaned seal pup on road to recovery at Exploris Aquarium after lough rescue
This little orphaned seal pup has been rescued and is being cared for at the Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry.
The pup is currently moulting, explaining its somewhat bedraggled appearance. Strangford Lough is home to a large number of seals and many pups become separated from their mothers at this time of year because of bad weather.
Many are underweight and suffering from infection or injuries, and sadly some do not survive.
Seals from other locations around the country are also brought to the experts at Exploris, where they are allowed to recuperate and build up their strength before being released into the wild.
Exploris itself was rescued from closure last year after a public campaign resulted in funds being found to keep the only aquarium in Northern Ireland open.
