Leigh McAleer: sense of achievement

A south Belfast student has travelled to the USA to participate in a major triathlon.

Promising athlete Leigh McAleer from the Ormeau Road headed off to Atlanta, Georgia, to participate in the Lake Lanier Triathlon — her first triathlon.

Leigh, who is currently studying for the National Diploma in Sport Development (Fitness and Coaching) at Belfast Metropolitan College, travelled to Atlanta two years ago for the summer to stay with a relative.

Whilst there she got involved with the local running club and Nafina Girls Gaelic Football team and vowed to return to participate in the Lake Lanier triathlon.

Leigh ran circuits of the Ormeau embankment and cycled on the Belfast to Lisburn towpath to prepare for the event.

Speaking before she headed to the USA, Leigh said: “I have overcome my fear of competing and am really looking forward to the sense of achievement I will get when I complete my first triathlon. Last year as part of my course we learnt a lot about sports psychology and I will be using what I learnt to stay positive.

“Recently we have been concentrating on sports nutrition so I’m eating plenty of carbohydrate and energy rich foods in preparation for the event.”
