A security alert is continuing into its second day in Londonderry.

A suspicious object was reported in the Southway area of the city on Thursday afternoon.

Homes were evacuated and residents were forced to spend the night in alternative accommodation over night.

Police have a number of cordons in place and traffic is affected.

A respite centre was opened at Long Tower Youth Club for people caught up in the disruption.

Police said they were working to minimise disruption.
