London's National Gallery topped the list

London's National Gallery has been named as the UK's best museum.

The capital boasts five of the country's top 10 museums in the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice awards.

The British Museum came second, followed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in third place.

The ranking was based on an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for museums over the past year.

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked number one in the world, while the Musee d'Orsay in Paris came top in Europe.

The National Gallery took fifth place in the continental ranking.

Chris Gottlieb, of the m ayor of London's promotional organisation London and Partners, expressed his delight at the capital's performance.

He said: " We look forward to welcoming visitors from around the globe to experience the world-renowned culture and incredible history and heritage that makes the capital the most popular destination on earth."

1. National Gallery, London

2. British Museum, London

3. Victoria and Albert Museum, London

4. Natural History Museum, London

5. The Roman Baths, Bath

6. National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

7. Churchill War Rooms, London

8. National Railway Museum, York

9. Titanic Belfast, Belfast

10. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow
