Lord Morrow wants to give firefighters same protection from violence as police
A senior politician has called for a change in the law after firefighters came under a shocking attack from a gang as they tackled a blaze.
Two firefighters were injured when they tried to put out a car fire in the New Lodge area of north Belfast earlier this month.
Firefighter Noel McKee (48), who was attacked with a bat, said he had never faced such "venom" in his 28-year career.
Last night, DUP MLA Lord Morrow said that unlike police officers, the law does not treat firefighters as emergency service personnel when they are attacked in the line of duty.
Calling for firefighters to be given the same status as police, he said he had tabled an amendment to the next stage of the Justice Bill which he dubbed "the Blue Light Amendment".
