Lucky 13 scoop Irish Lottery: Syndicate wins €5m jackpot but say they won't give up their jobs

By Donna Deeney

The number 13 proved to be extremely lucky for the members of a syndicate who scooped almost €5 million (£3.95m) in Wednesday night's Irish Lottery draw.

The group of 13 – who are from Londonderry and Co Donegal – work at a call centre in Malin Head and will each receive almost £300,000.

While the Champagne corks popped yesterday, no one from the lucky syndicate was planning on giving up their day jobs.

One of the winners, Amanda McFadden, said a mad flurry of texts on Wednesday night from her workmates left her thinking someone was playing a joke.

She said: "We only formed the syndicate at the start of this year and you don't really expect to hit the jackpot like this.

"We don't do the same numbers every week, we do quick picks, and it was one of the other members who had got the ticket, so when he checked the numbers he started texting the rest of us to say we had won.

"Texts were coming from everywhere but none of us really believed it was true until we went into work and saw the ticket with our own eyes.

"We had to make do with a cup of coffee to celebrate to begin with, but we managed to celebrate with Champagne later on.

"It is not a truly life-changing amount of money, but 13 families in Derry and Donegal will benefit from it, which I think is better than if it had been just one of us.

"One of the girls in the syndicate is on holiday so we are waiting until Monday to go and collect our winnings so that she can be with us, but after that it's back to work."

The winning ticket was bought in Cullen's shop in Buncrana in Co Donegal and the lucky numbers were 19, 25, 26, 27, 39, 45.
