Lurgan security alert continues overnight

Published 30/10/2010

Families were kept out of their homes by police last night as a security alert in Lurgan continued.

The alert began shortly after 9am yesterday when the Army was called to examine a suspicious device under a bridge in the Tullydagan Road area.

A police spokeswoman said: “We understand that the families are staying with family members.”

The railway between Portadown and Lisburn was also disrupted by the alert, with rail links closed in both directions.

A Translink spokesperson said a bus substitution service was in place. Craigavon mayor Stephen Moutray condemned the incident and described the perpetrators as “thugs”.

He said: “This sort of activity causes considerable disruption to the transport links and sends out the wrong message about this area at this time.”
