Man (19) arrested following reports of business staff being threatened at knife point in Newtownards

A man has been arrested following reports that staff at business premises in Newtownards were threatened by a would-be robber armed with a knife.

Shortly after 9pm on Saturday police received a report that a man was threatening staff at business premises on Regent Street in the Co Down town with a knife.

Police responded and observed the man in the street threatening members of the public. The male was restrained by police and subsequently arrested.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon following the incident.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident, or anyone who with any information that can assist with the investigation, to contact detectives at Bangor Police Station on 101, quoting reference number 1148 of 14/01/17.
