A 19-year-old man has died and his friend was seriously injured following a crash between their motorbike and a lorry in Co Londonderry.

The young man who died is from Kilrea and is the first motorbike pillion passenger to have died on Northern Ireland roads this year.

His friend who was driving the motorbike was airlifted to hospital where his injuries are described as serious.

The collision happened on the Agivey Road in Aghadowey around 5pm on Saturday - not long after 20-year-old rider Malachi Mitchell-Thomas died after his crash at the NW200.

The Agivey Road remains closed and police have advised motorists to seek alternative routes.

Police appealed for witnesses to come forward with information.
