A 74-year-old man has been ordered to stand trial accused of raping a child in Belfast.

The defendant is also alleged to have subjected the girl to sexual abuse over a period of up to three years.

He cannot be named to ensure her identity is protected.

The man faces a charge of raping a child under 13, along with 12 counts of sexually assaulting her.

He is further accused of four charges of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and engaging in a sexual act in her presence.

The alleged offences occurred on dates between 2009 and 2012.

A preliminary enquiry hearing to establish if the defendant has a case to answer was listed for Belfast Magistrates' Court today.

The Court Service confirmed he was returned for trial on a date to be fixed.

The accused was released on £500 bail until those proceedings get underway.
