Man arrested after woman sexually assaulted in Downpatrick

A 23-year-old man has been arrested following the sexual assault of a woman in Downpatrick.

It happened in the Market Street area on Wednesday afternoon.

It was reported that a woman, aged in her 20s, was sexually assaulted.

The man was arrested a short time later and has since been released on police bail pending further enquirers.

Police have said they believe this is an isolated incident, however as a reassurance to the local community there will be an increase in police patrols in the local area.

A PSNI spokesman added: "This incident occurred in a public place at a busy time of the day, therefore anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact Downpatrick Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 543 of 03/08/16."
