Man arrested over GAA clubhouse arson
Police investigating the fire at the Sean Dolan’s GAA club in Londonderry have arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of arson.
He was later released pending further investigations.
The fire at the club broke out in the early hours of December 28 and was initially deemed by the police to have been accidental.
However, after club members viewed CCTV they had previously given the PSNI — which appears to show two figures outside the club and a series of flashes — senior PSNI officers in Derry reopened the investigation.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the bar area and the roof, leaving the club with an estimated repair bill of £250,000.
The arrest comes days after Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin confirmed he has referred the initial handling of the fire in December to the Police Ombudsman, who will carry out an independent investigation into how officers carried out the primary investigation.
