A man was left needing hospital treatment after he was assaulted by a gang armed with a knife and hammer in a Newtownabbey burglary.

Four masked men forced their way into the Rathmore Drive home in Rathcoole at around 9.30pm on Sunday.

The assailants also damaged a number of household items and a car which had been parked at the front of the house.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

Detective Inspector Christopher Millar appealed to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information to contact Detectives at Newtownabbey on the non-emergency number 101.
