The attack happened around 9.30pm on Sunday night when two men - armed with a crowbar and a hammer - forced their way into a house in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.
The men then assaulted the victim and ransacked his home, before making off with a samurai sword, knife and a mobile phone.
They then fled in the direction of Hesketh Road.
The victim was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
