A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a sports club employee was attacked with a machete.

The serious assault happened at a Co Antrim sports club late on Saturday night.

A man who worked at the sports club at The Square in Ballyclare was injured after the man struck him a number of times with the large knife during the incident.

The attacker is understood to have arrived in a blue Volkswagen Passat car at around 11pm before he got out and set upon the staff member with the machete before fleeing. The man who worked at the club was taken to hospital and treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.

A man was later arrested and was last night in custody assisting police with their inquiries. Detective Constable Dalton appealed for anyone who was in The Square in Ballyclare at around the time of the attack and has any information relating to the incident to come forward.

Police can be reached on 101, or details left with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
