Man charged with endangering plane safety

Transatlantic flight was diverted to Belfast International Airport due to disruptive passenger.

A man has been charged with endangering plane safety after a flight to Chicago was forced to land at Belfast International Airport.

The 42-year-old was on board United Airlines flight 971 from Rome to Chicago that was diverted to Belfast International Airport on Saturday evening.

The man, who has dual US-Italian nationality, has also been charged with disruptive behaviour on board an aircraft and common assault.

The aircraft remained at the airport overnight due to crew issues and was scheduled to leave on Sunday.

He is due to appear before Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday.
