Man dies in Amsterdam canal fall

A man from Northern Ireland has died after being found in a canal in Amsterdam.

It is understood Damien McFadden, 37, from Londonderry, fell into the Singel Canal in the city at the weekend.

Stormont's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness passed on his condolences to the dead man's family.

"I am absolutely devastated to hear the news," he said.

"He is a father of a young family and in fact he lives very close to my daughter. It is a very distressing story, heartbreaking.

"My thoughts obviously go out to the family at this very, very sad time."

Mr McFadden was an Irish citizen. Dublin's Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was helping the family.

"We are providing consular assistance both through our embassy in The Hague and through our consular team in Dublin," said a spokeswoman.
