Man dies in blazing house

A man in his 20s has died in a house fire in Londonderry.

The blaze broke out in a property at De Burgh Square at about 11am.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was found in the living room of the house and declared dead at the scene.

Neighbours, who saw smoke, raised the alarm.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said.

SDLP Westminster candidate Mark Durkan said the community had been shocked and saddened by the tragedy.

Mr Durkan said: "This news comes with a great sense of shock not only to immediate neighbours but to the entire community.

"My initial thoughts are for the bereaved family of this young man to whom I send my deepest sympathies and sincere condolences at this very distressing time.

"It is a terrible tragedy for someone so young to have died in these circumstances."
