Man found guilty of assaulting his former wife
A man has been acquitted of setting fire to his ex-wife's kitchen, but convicted of attacking her.
The Belfast Crown Court jury unanimously convicted 32-year-old Darren Meek, from Carlan Close in Newtownabbey, of causing actual bodily harm to his ex-wife, Caroline Wilson, on December 9, 2009 and of causing criminal damage to a van.
The jury could not reach a verdict on the charge of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered. He was also cleared of possessing a knife.
The jury had heard allegations that Meek “flipped out” after his ex-wife revealed that she had an affair during their marriage.
Prosecutors have until Thursday to take instructions over whether Meek would face a retrial on the outstanding charge.
