A sports club employee has been attacked by a man with a machete.

Police said a 27-year-old man was arrested and taken in for questioning after the assault outside the The Square in Ballyclare, Co Antrim, at about 11pm on Saturday evening.

Officers described the incident as serious and the member of staff was said to have suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Detectives said a man drove up to the club in a blue Volkswagon Passat, got out of the car and struck the worker a number of times with the machete before fleeing.

The injured man was treated in hospital.

Detective Constable Dalton appealed for anyone who was in The Square in Ballyclare at around the time of the attack and has any information relating to the incident to come forward.
