Man held over home attack on pensioner
A 37-year-old man has been charged after a 24-hour crimewave in east Belfast.
Following an incident in the Greenville Road area of Ballyhackamore on Sunday morning, the suspect was charged with false imprisonment, theft, assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.
The suspect was also charged with false imprisonment, burglary and assault following a separate incident in which a 70-year-old man was attacked in his home in the Abetta Parade area at around 10am on Sunday.
The victim was assaulted and tied up during the burglary.
The suspect is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates court today.
Local politicians have expressed shock at the attacks, with DUP MLA Robin Newton saying it “would strike fear into the hearts and minds of older residents” in the area, and UUP MLA Michael Copeland expressing relief at the arrest, which will “put the minds of the local community at ease”.
