Man hit by bus while out walking seventh to die on roads this year: Named as Robert Morris

BY CLAIRE WILLIAMSON

A man who died after he was hit by a bus while out walking has been named as 64-year-old Robert Morris.

It is thought the middle-aged man's wife watched the accident happen as she waited for him to return.

It happened yesterday evening at around 5.45pm on the Killowen Road in the village of Rostrevor, Co Down.

Police said one only vehicle was involved in the collision and the road remained closed to traffic last night.

It is understood the family man was well-known in the community.

Sinn Fein councillor Mick Murphy said it was a tragedy.

"My thoughts are with the victim's family and God help the person who knocked them down, it's as hard for them as it is for the man's family that was killed," he said.

"The weather was very, very bad, it's heavy weather, raining heavy so we have to take that in to consideration as well.

"It's an awful tragedy for both the person involved and the man who has lost his life."

It is the seventh fatality on the roads this year and comes just days after Environment Minister Mark H Durkhan (left), who is responsible for road safety in Northern Ireland, called a meeting after five fatalities occurred within the first 10 days of the new year.

The meeting was organised after a senior police officer said Northern Ireland was facing a "road safety emergency".

Another man died in a crash before that meeting took place.

Speaking at a Press conference PSNI Supt David Moore said: "We've had someone dying on our roads every 48 hours in the early days of 2014. That's a month's worth of carnage in a little over a week and five families torn apart."

Supt Moore said that Northern Ireland's road safety new year resolution was "broken already".

"This road safety emergency is the responsibility of everybody who enters a road way, whether on four wheels, on two wheels or on foot," he added.
