Man 'impaled' on railing in Belfast's Botanic Avenue
A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he became 'impaled' on a railing in Belfast's Botanic Avenue.
The victim tripped and fell headfirst, and the railing impaled him through his chin.
He is aged in his 50s and it is believed he was trapped for about 45 minutes.
The incident happened outside Zuni Hairdressing salon, on the corner of Botanic Avenue and University Street in south Belfast, at about 5.30pm on Wednesday.
Paramedics and fire crews were called to the scene to rescue the man from the 4ft railing.
He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where he is in a critical but stable condition.
Station Commander Gerry Lennon of the NIFRS told UTV: "The man had tripped over and managed to impale himself right through the neck area on a four-foot railing.
"We worked closely with our colleagues in the Ambulance Service including a trauma doctor who sedated the man then we managed to free him using hydraulic cutting equipment.
"He was then taken to hospital for treatment on his injuries."
Staff in the hair salon were not aware the accident had happened until emergency services arrived.
