Man jailed for beating partner
A man who battered his partner about the head and tried to strangle her after he was woken up by their three-year-old child coming into the room was jailed for five months at Londonderry Magistrates Court.
Thomas David McNair (41), of Kimberley Hill in the city, was charged with aggravated assault on his partner on June 16.
Judge Barney McElholm said the offence was committed while McNair was attending a domestic violence course.
The assault was witnessed by the child who was left in an “extremely distressed” state and Mr McElholm said the courts had to deal with the “absurd notion” among many males that they could hit women.
The judge also said there was a pattern whereby the partner would plead on McNair's behalf after the assaults. He said he was “not impressed” by this and added as a matter of public policy and to protect the children in the case he was jailing McNair.
