A relationship that began on the internet ended up with a woman being assaulted by her partner, a court has heard.
Michael Lenaghan (43), of Crawford Square in Londonderry, admitted assaulting the woman and causing criminal damage to her car last April.
The court heard that after the relationship began on the internet the woman moved from Scotland to live with Lenaghan.
On April 9 last year an argument started and Lenaghan assaulted her causing “significant injuries”.
The court heard that the woman sustained bruising to her face, her eyes, her neck and arms, as well as a fracture to her cheek and puncture marks on her arm where Lenaghan bit her.
Judge Piers Grant said the assault had involved “considerable violence” with “multiple blows and multiple injuries”.
He said that he would take account of the fact that Lenaghan bit the woman, something the judge said was “totally reprehensible”.
He sentenced Lenaghan to 15 months in prison and invoked a three-month suspended sentence.
