Man jailed for kicking pregnant woman in stomach
Carlisle later released on bail pending appeal against sentence
A man who kicked a pregnant woman in the stomach during a St Valentine's Day assault has been jailed for six months.
Ryan Carlisle, 31, attacked the victim as she lay on the ground during a domestic incident in Belfast, a court heard.
Children were said to have witnessed the violence being inflicted on her.
Carlisle, of Ballygomartin Road in the city, admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm to the woman on February 14 this year.
As he appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court today for sentencing, District Judge Fiona Bagnall was told of his remorse over what happened.
Although she accepted his contrition was genuine, Mrs Bagnall said the offence involved gratuitous violence.
Pointing to a series of aggravating factors, the judge continued: "The injured party was pregnant at the time.
"Not only was she kicked and punched when she was on the ground, but kicked to the stomach while she was pregnant."
She added: "Children were present and saw this attack take place."
Only a sentence of immediate imprisonment is appropriate for Carlisle's actions, the judge ruled.
She confirmed: "I'm therefore going to impose six months in custody."
Carlisle was later released on bail pending a planned appeal against the sentence.
