Man knifed uncle in the heart, court told
A police officer said yesterday that the man stabbed to death near his nephew's home in the Waterside area of Londonderry on October 30 was stabbed in the heart with a knife.
The disclosure was made at the city’s Magistrate’s Court during a bail application by James Healy (31) from Hollymount Park, who is charged with murdering his uncle Christopher McGaughey (56).
A police officer told District Judge Barney McElholm that Mr McGaughey was stabbed following an earlier altercation.
Opposing bail during the video link hearing, the officer said the defendant had been interviewed 13 times by police.
She said the defendant told investigators that Mr McGaughey sustained the fatal injury “in a collision between them”. Police believe Healy had earlier armed himself with two knives.
The application was withdrawn until January 5 to enable the defence to obtain a potential bail address outside Londonderry.
