Man lied after ear bitten off by brother
A man who had part of his ear bitten off by his brother has been put on probation for 18 months at the Crown Court in Londonderry after he admitted lying to police about the incident.
Brian Cross (25), from Glenbank Road in the city, fought with his sibling Gareth at St Eithne's Park on March 25 of last year.
A prosecution barrister told Judge Piers Grant that when Cross went to hospital to have his injury treated, he claimed that a gang had attacked him at Lowry's Lane.
The next day his girlfriend told police that his brother Gareth had inflicted the injury. Brian Cross was charged with and admitted perverting the course of justice.
His brother Gareth was charged with assault but the case against him didn't go ahead because neither Brian Cross nor his girlfriend would give evidence against him.
As well as imposing the probation order, the judge ordered Cross "to attend for community mental health treatment for the next two years".
