Man shot in the leg as he went to answer the door of his north Belfast home

A man has been shot in the leg as he went to answer the door of his north Belfast home.

His partner and their four young children were also in the house at the time.

At 10pm on Tuesday October 20 the male resident went to answer a knock at the door of their property in the Butler Walk area of north Belfast.

Before opening the door, he heard a loud bang and realised that he had been shot in the leg.

He was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which were not life threatening.

Detective Inspector Peter Mullan said: "This is an appalling incident which has not only caused injury and distress to the male, but also significant upset and distress to his partner and their four young children who were at home during the incident.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact Detectives at Musgrave Reactive and Organised Crime on the non-emergency number 101.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
