Police in Londonderry are appealing for information about an assault in which a man sustained a suspected fractured skull and broken jaw.

Officers attended a report of an assault outside the Phoenix Bar on Park Avenue shortly before 7pm on Tuesday.

A 23-year-old man was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital after suffering serious head and facial injuries.

A 44-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent. He was admitted to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Two men are alleged to have been involved in the initial incident.

One ran off along Lower Nassau Street after the incident, while the second got into a car outside the bar.

Sinn Fein councillor for the area Eric McGinley expressed his concern over the assault.

"It appears the incident took place outside the Phoenix Bar in Rosemount," he said.

"It is unclear whether it started inside or outside of the pub and who was involved at this stage."
