Running a marathon is hard enough, but one Londonderry man faced an even bigger challenge on the finishing line - getting down on one knee and proposing.

Joe Kennedy (27) ran the Walled City Marathon on Sunday and at the end of the gruelling race he was met by his girlfriend Eimear Kelly (27) from Armagh.

Despite his wobbly legs, Joe got down on the finish line in front of all their friends and family - and Eimear said yes.

He said: "The whole way around, I wasn't thinking about the proposal itself. I knew I was making the right decision to ask her. We've been together for five years and within the first week of meeting her, I knew she was the girl for me. I'm delighted she said yes."

Joe ran the marathon for the MS Society, because Eimear's mum Martina lives with multiple sclerosis, and was delighted to have both their families present.

Eimear said: "It was already an emotional day. It meant so much to me that he was running for my mum, who has lived with MS for 15 years. It was honestly the best day ever."
