Mencap is now part of our family

Michelle Nicholas from Belfast is on Mencap's Young Professionals committee. Mencap works alongside and represents the interests of people in Northern Ireland with a learning disability and their families.

"My sister Laura has a severe learning disability so as a family we have been involved with Mencap for years.

"When the opportunity arose to be involved in the Young Professionals Committee I jumped at the chance.

"It is so nice being on the committee and getting directly involved in giving back.

"Mencap gave my mum support and advice and offered respite care for Laura, who is a year older than me.

"We have some brilliant memories of Mencap over the years. Laura is 28 but we are still heavily involved. It's like a family to us.

"The committee is great fun. We are trying to organise youthful events and bring a fresh approach to the charity and reach more people.

"We want people to get involved that perhaps don't know much about us.

"Any level of involvement is fine, even going to an event. A great opportunity to get involved is at the Mencap Summer Pub Quiz.

"It takes place on Thursday, July 3, at 7.30pm at The Errigle, on the Ormeau Road, in Belfast.

"It will be a great night."
