Michelle Gildernew in poll 'due to gender imbalance'
Former Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew has said she was finally selected to stand for the Assembly as a woman needed to be on the candidate list in Fermanagh/South Tyrone.
The former Stormont minister was selected last December. But Sinn Fein re-ran the process in January and she was deselected. Then a third process took place this month, and she was reselected.
Ms Gildernew said her unusual selection occurred after the party realised it had the gender balance wrong, as "there were three Fermanagh men on the ticket".
Ms Gildernew said the selection process had been run "impeccably" but added: "I think there was a disparity in the figures. I think someone had accidentally got two ballot papers, or something."
