Minister John O'Dowd to meet dad of rugby death teen
The father of a teenager who died after sustaining head injuries during a school rugby match is to meet the Education Minister in a bid to try and prevent future tragedies.
Ben Robinson collapsed during the match in January 2011 and later died in hospital.
Earlier this week a coroner ruled that the 14-year-old from Carrickfergus died from second impact syndrome – the first case of its kind in Northern Ireland.
Minister John O'Dowd said yesterday that new information on concussion management and awareness would be distributed to schools after concerns about a lack of knowledge on the issue were raised during Ben's inquest.
He added that he would be keen to meet with Ben's father.
Ben's father Peter said: "It's fantastic to know that things are being moved on. Unfortunately, it's Ben's death which is at the centre of this storm, but we want to do what we can to push the law forward."
