Four senior staff members at the East Belfast Mission have been suspended.

The mission, which employs 100 people, was founded in 1985 to engage in community development in the Newtownards Road, Ballymacarrett district.

The four staff members suspended from their positions in the organisation were advised of the decision yesterday.

At this stage the reason for the suspension has not been made public.

Last night, Rev Gary Mason, mission superintendent, told the Belfast Telegraph it was with regret the staff members had to be suspended, but stressed that it wasn't for "earth-shattering" reasons.

"As a precautionary measure East Belfast Mission has unfortunately had to suspend four staff members pending an internal investigation," he said.

In September, the mission moved into a "state-of-the-art" centre on the Newtownards Road.
