Mitchells scoop new award
A Holywood couple have accepted a new award from charity Sustrans and Lady Hermon.
Jackie and Billy Mitchell have made an outstanding contribution to walking and cycling as Sustrans volunteers. Just four other people across the UK won an award.
Patricia Wallace, of Sustrans, said the charity had around 3,000 volunteers across the UK, but that the commitment and effort from Jackie and Billy had been “exceptional”.
“Their enthusiasm is infectious and between them they have promoted walking and cycling in ways that we could never have achieved.”
As volunteer rangers the Mitchells have helped to improve and promote the national cycle network and organised community bike rides
Lady Hermon MP praised the contribution of volunteers to charities like Sustrans and said it was wonderful that a Northern Ireland couple had scooped this UK award. “I have seen Jackie and Billy in action, volunteering at events in Holywood. Their dedication is admirable and truly deserving of national recognition.”
