The 84-year-old discovered a sum of money missing after a man called to his home on Saturday.

Callous thieves stole money from a pensioner during a distraction burglary in north Belfast.

Just after 10.30am a man called at the home of an 84-year-old man on Sydney Street West, off the Crumlin Road.

He told the resident he had been sent to do some work in his back garden. The householder accompanied this man to the garden where he appeared to check the drains.

Once back inside the house, the man suddenly ran off. The resident, finding this odd, then checked his property and discovered a sum of money had been stolen.

Police believe a second person had entered the home and rifled through the downstairs while the householder was distracted by the first man.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call detectives at Musgrave Reactive and Organised Crime on 101.
